U.S. Artist Gary Staab Uses 3-D Printing to Replicate 5K-Year-Old Mummy

MAINZ, Germany — Some 5,000 years after his violent death, one of the world's best-known mummified bodies has been replicated by an American artist using 3-D printing technology.

"Ötzi the Iceman" became a media sensation in 1991 after he was discovered by a pair of German hikers high in the Italian mountains.Named after the Ötztal Alps in which he was discovered, Ötzi likely bled to death after he was shot in the shoulder with an arrow more than five millennia ago.

Most of us can only view the body in darkened room at Italy’s South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology — a necessary measure to protect Ötzi's uniquely preserved body. But thanks to the efforts of Missouri-based artist Gary Staab, who specializes in making replicas of archaeological finds, three models of the Iceman have now been created and will be used for scientific lectures in the U.S."It was probably the most difficult project I ever worked on," the 48-year old told NBC News.

Staab spent more than 2,000 hours on the project and has previously sculptured replicas of mummies from Peru and Egypt, as well as the ash figures from Pompeii. After examining the original Ötzi in Bolzano, Italy, last summer, he used CT scans to create a medical-grade 3D-printed model using liquid resin. The stereolithography was done in a giant 3-D printer at Belgium-based company Materialise. However, the scans were not able to capture all of the body parts, such as the hands and ribs, so the model was completed with paint and clay.

"Staab succeeded in carving out fine detail," said Angelika Fleckinger, director of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. "The result of his work is therefore confusingly similar to the original."One of the models will be included in a traveling exhibition due to start in October 2017 at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, in Raleigh. The other two will be used for teaching purposes in New York's Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center.

Staab said he hopes "to please the scientists" with his creations

The first 3D print satellite was successfully launched

The first 3D print satellite was successfully launched

Previously, Boeing using 3D printing technology to create aircraft parts caused many conservative concerns, reflecting the rise in recent years, 3D printing technology has not been widely recognized by the public. And recently, a Russian initiative for 3D printing technology provides a strong endorsement.

Recently, the Russian astronaut Sergei Rajazansky (SergeiRyazansky) in the International Space Station successfully launched a mini satellite, and this satellite is almost entirely by the 3D printing technology. The TomskTPU-120 is Russia's first 3D print satellite, developed by Tomsk Polytechnic University and Southwest State University. After the launch is successful, the satellite is expected to run in its orbit for 6 months, in addition to measuring the Earth's surface and transmission data, the satellite will also be broadcast through the radio station in 11 languages to commemorate the first man-made earth The 60th anniversary of the launch of satellites and the 160th anniversary of the birth of the space.

3D printing technology for the manufacturing industry has brought great changes, and with the reliability of this emerging technology, stability has gradually proved that it is expected for human production and manufacturing to bring more huge changes.

If DCP 9020CDW fuser unit, damaged again

If DCP 9020CDW fuser unit, damaged again

If DCP 9020CDW with 2 broken fuser units. The first one lasted about a year. The second one lasted about 4 months. They have both failed in the same way. The heat roller has a soft black plastic like cover on it which has split and become damaged. you don't do anything unusual. you just put new paper in the tray and use refilled brother toner cartridges. If you actually like this printer a lot. And you don't want to keep replacing the fuser.I think you can try to repair it.

I prior to have the same problem. Low mileage DCP 9020CDW, that's about two years old and the Fuser unit is 'US'. Have put a replacement in, but having trouble resetting the maintenance 'fuser reset' function. Now just makes a lot of noise and doesn't print. Have reseated all the wires (two of the pins - Dual White cable connection - are rather loose, which a bit concerning!). Fellow sufferer I'm afraid. Interested to hear if anyone has a cure or diagnosis. We usually have the printer on all the time due to its wireless functionality, I can only surmise that its over heating, making the roller delaminate.

If Printer works but still shows error message to replace toner. Could this be because I just opened and installed the starter cartridge that came with the printer? When you set the printer up you installed a new high yield cartridge.what can you do?

This is part drum reset but as long as you follow the steps correctly it will clear the message of *Replace toner* (Be aware of step 5) Let me know how you get on.

1. On the printer, open the front toner compartment door.

2. The Printer display will read, “Front cover open.”
3. Press the “Clear” button.
4. Printer will beep and the display should read, “Replace Drum?”
5. This is the tricky part, ignore the replace drum instructions. Instead on the keypad type in “*00″.
